Three Things That Hurt Your Blog

I had a giveaway a couple of weeks ago. You can’t win a contest, or anything else, if you don’t have a way to be contacted. I had to keep drawing names until I found one that had a contact email somewhere that I could find it.

Every Friday I do Welcome Wagon Friday.  It makes it so much harder when I can’t find a way to contact you to notify you that you’ve been featured. Which I do as soon as I hit Publish. So I leave a comment on your blog, and hope you see it.

And while I’m at it, let me say that if you aren’t blogging more than once a week or so, it’s hard for me to choose you to feature on Fridays. Because then my readers will already know you’re one of those bloggers that are “hit and miss.” You don’t post regularly. Readers want to know that you’re going to be consistent. They probably won’t bother to check back otherwise.

Your photos: I see blogs all the time that I’m interested in. But their photos are tiny. In our genre as shelter bloggers, photos are everything. You not only need to learn to take good photos. But no matter how good your photos are, if they aren’t big enough to see, what difference does it make?

And another point I want to make. I host Tweak It Tuesdays. Every Tuesday I feature 10 bloggers’ projects from the week before. Some of the photos are too small for me to edit. I resize my photos to 500 pixels so that my post will look consistent and streamlined. I can’t resize small photos without them looking grainy. Therefore I can’t feature your blog.

So what are the lessons to be learned here? Below are three answers to help your blog experience.

1. Have a way to be contacted on your blog in a prominent place. If you don’t want to have a clickable link, then instead of @ you can type “at.”

2. Post consistently.

3. Size your photos big enough to fit within your blog page. It doesn’t look very good when you have a small photo with lots of white space. It doesn’t look scaled correctly.

If you have any other suggestions about blogging, or things that drive you crazy about reading blogs, leave them in the comments.

And just so you know, I’m playing around with new themes. In true blogger fashion, for my Christmas present I purchased the Elegant WordPress Themes, and then couldn’t resist buying the Prose theme. It is very customizable and fits my Genesis framework. I love to play with blog design. So bear with me while I have a little fun with it.
